Streethay Parish Council Supports Community Centre Loan in Principle
At its Full Council Meeting on Tuesday 18th March, 2025, Streethay Parish Council has confirmed its support in principle for a loan of up to £500,000 from Lichfield District Council over a period up to 40 years to support the delivery of Streethay’s long-awaited Community Centre.
The Council recognises the importance of progressing this vital project for local residents and has remained dedicated to address the shortfall in funding provided by the S106 agreement made in relation to the Miller / Bovis Homes development pragmatically to ensure value for money for local residents in the delivery of the centre.
Whilst announcing its support in principle, the Council is clear that there are a number of outstanding considerations that must be addressed by Lichfield District Council before a full commitment of acceptance is made, including around the impact of devolution. Additionally, the Council wishes to make clear the formal process to seek a loan would require permission from the Secretary of State in order to authorise the borrowing, meaning that if finalised, the Council would anticipate the receipt of the funds in the 2026/27 financial year at the earliest.
A spokesperson for Streethay Parish Council said:
“We know how much the delivery of the Community Centre means to local residents. When built, the facility would soon become the beating heart of the local community for use by local residents, groups, and act as a base for the council to further develop its community outreach and engagement, and we are determined to see it delivered. Supporting this loan in principle is a step forward, but there are further cautious steps to take before making a final decision. Our priority is to make sure this project is financially responsible and sustainable for the long term, delivering not only a state-of-the-art facility for local residents, but doing so whilst providing value for money for local people.”.
Streethay Parish Council will now focus on working with Lichfield District Council to see the delivery of the loan, and further developing its prospective community centre business case, ensuring robust plans are in place to make full use of the facility.
